Truth About Pet Food 2

Not What is Expected

May 25, 2021 by Editorial Team

It might not be illegal or dangerous, but it certainly isn’t what we expect. Pallets of pet food stored outside, in 90 degree heat and in the sun.

Over the Labor Day weekend, I visited with my daughter in Salt Lake City, Utah. On Sunday, we drove past the American Nutrition pet food manufacturing plant in Ogden. Nothing much could be seen of the plant from the street (closed for the holiday weekend), except for this…

That’s two pallets of Natural Balance pet food. Under no cover, out in the direct sun. The temperature on this day was over 90 degrees.

I don’t know if canned pet food would be damaged from sitting out in the sun for several days, but it certainly is not what the industry portrays to us is it? The industry leads us to believe they all use wholesome ingredients and carefully craft them into properly balanced healthy meals. But would you prepare a healthy meal for your family and then leave it outside, in the hot sun next to a garbage barrel?

Another ‘not what is expected’ incident from my trip to Utah happened in a parking garage. This car was parked across of ours in an underground parking lot.

No direct sun, but there was no air flow underground and it was over 90 degrees. And then I heard a dog crying – coming from this car. As it turns out, a small dog was locked in a crate inside this vehicle; the windows were barely cracked. Even though we had another appointment that day (my daughter was trying on wedding dresses!), I couldn’t leave that little dog defenseless. We called mall security, and they called Animal Control. By the time the owner returned to the car (just as Animal Control arrived), an hour had passed since we discovered the little dog. Mall security told me the dog was ok, and the owner was ticketed.

The owner of this little dog should never have left it in the car. American Nutrition should never have left two pallets of pet food out in the direct sun over a holiday weekend. People don’t always do what they should, the results of that can be very dangerous.
